As an avid amateur weightlifter my career path has often been marked by a boxing style. The first few times I boxed, I was a young man. I was so focused on the fight, not the sport of it. Then I got older, I got more confident, and I got more skilled. I began to box more and more like a professional, and as I grew older, my career focused more on competition.
It’s a common misconception that boxing is a sport. That’s not the case. A lot of the things that you do do are for the benefit of the boxing fans, not the boxing fans themselves.
By the time a boxer becomes a professional, he or she has already lost everything, or in the case of some of the better athletes, they have already lost their lives. The sport itself is about much more than just fighting. If you look at the history of the sport, the first big event is the Olympics, which is an international contest between the best boxers from every country. The Olympics is a great indicator for how well a boxer is doing on the competitive ladder.
There’s a bit of crossover between MMA and boxing. The difference is that boxing, at least at the professional level, is a sport that involves a lot of sparring. A typical fight consists of four rounds of punching, sometimes five or six, at which point the referee calls the bout over (or whatever other signal is sent). A boxer, on the other hand, goes to the ring with his arm raised.
I have to admit, I’m not a boxing fan. I’m actually a mma guy. But my wife is and she’s the one who really enjoys it. So when a friend asked her if she’d like to try boxing, things quickly escalated from “oh, really? What do you think of mma? What do you think about the sport?” to “are you serious? Can you do it?” To her, it’s like any sport.
I think that there’s a chance that we won’t see mma in a couple weeks, but I’m not sure.
I think the reason boxing is popular is for the same reason most of us are on Facebook (or some shit like that): it’s a sport where the winner gets to keep the fight. The winner of a fight in the ring is more likely to get some nice little souvenir from his opponents. Also, as a former (and even current) champion of the sport, I can tell you that I haven’t had a moment of peace in the ring since I was a little kid.
Sure, when you’re a champ, you might get to fight an opponent who was a little bit of a shit. But if you’ve been a champ since the 1800s you should know that you’re better off than some other boxer who’s been living in the past.
The fight has started. You can tell I’m not going to give the fighters a second chance. I like boxing, but I don’t like the fight. Most of the fighters I’ve fought, I think, are really good at it. They’re pretty good at it, but I don’t think they’re really good at it.
If you are serious about fighting, then this is where you get your start. I like boxing, but I dont like the fight.
